Notice how there are a number of small steps in the graded exposure program for John, and the least difficult scenario is tackled first, followed by the next difficult and then the next ... until ultimately John is able to deal with a spider in his unit. In this way the graded exposure program is achievable. John will notice that his anxiety will rise when he does each step, but it will then fall. Each step is repeated until it causes less anxiety (at least 50 per cent less) and then John will move on to the next. Sometimes there may be a setback and John will need to return to a previous step and redo that step, then move on to the next one. The program will take John a good length of time to work through, maybe several months. He will need assistance from the therapist to source the jars with spiders in them. John does not need to be able to have a spider sitting on him; he just needs to be able to deal with one in his unit.
